Junko Koizumi

Koizumi Junko 小泉 順子 is a Professor of Modern Thai History and Historiography at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University (Japan), a specialist in Thai history from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth, with publications covering issues such as ethnic minorities, taxation, gender, family and diplomatic relations. 

In the 1990s, Junko Koizumi was a researcher with the Department of Agricultural Economics,
Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Tokyo. In 2008, she directed the workshop ​“Historical Narrative and Nationalism: Between Tribute and Treaties in Modern Thailand”. From 2018 to 2024, she conducted at Kyoto University the multi-year funded research project ​“The Chakri Reform and China/​Chinese Issues: Rethinking Colonial Modernity and Comparative Perspectives” (in Thailand and Southeast Asia). Her research remains important for Cambodian and Khmer studies.
