Portrait of Thế Anh Nguyen

Nguyễn Thế Anh (1 June 1936, Thakhek, Laos — 19 March 2023, Toulouse, France) was a Vietnamese historian specializing in modern history of Vietnam — in particular the Nguyễn dynasty — and its relations with neighboring countries

Certified professor of history in 1963, Nguyễn Thế Anh served as President (Recteur) of Hué University (19661969), then Head of the Department of History at Saigon Faculté des lettres from 1969 to April 1975, when he left Vietnam at the end of the American War.

After being a visiting researcher at IRSEA Singapore, he moved to France in 1976, becoming a researcher and study director at the Centre national de la recherché scientifique until 1991. He was invited to teach at Harvard University (USA) in 1978. In 1987, he presented his doctoral thesis — La monarchie des Nguyễn de la mort de l’empereur Tự Đức à 1925 — at Sorbonne University, Paris. In 1991, he was appointed Head of research unit and Professor (Professor Emeritus since 2014) at École pratique des hautes études (EPHE, IVe section, sciences historiques et philologiques), while coordinating the Centre d’histoire et civilisations de la péninsule indochinoise within CNRS.

In his research and publications, Prof. Nguyễn Thế Anh always set Vietnamese studies in regional and worldwide contexts, exploring dynamics in Mainland Southeast Asia as well as international trade and navigation routes connecting Vietnam to other parts of the world.
