Pātāla is the Sanskrit name for “nether world”, one of the dwelling places of Snakes (Sarpas) and Nagas.
In Mahayana Buddhism, Pātāla refers to the —lowest of the seven lower planetary systems. In Pali language, the term came to refer to an abyss or an underground cave.
