Nithi Aeurisvongse นิธิ เอียวศรีวงศ์ [or Nidhi ​‘Īaosīwong, Nidhi Eeosewong] (23 May 1940, Chiang Mai – 7 Aug. 2023, Chiang Mai, Thailand) was a Thai historian, writer, and political commentator whose research focused on the way Thai power structure evolved ​“from ​“absolute monarchy to a monarchy becoming the key force in aligning the interests of diverse elites,” and on ancient kingship representations and religious beliefs predating the Siamese state.


Born to a ​“Chinese-Lao” (a term used for Thai-Chinese communities from the border) family in Chiang Mai, Pr. Nithi started his academic career at Chiang Mai University, obtiaining a PhD from the University of Michigan (USA) in 1976, teaching at the Center for Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Japan (1982−1983) and resuming his work at Chiang Mai U until his retirement in 2000. A respected political commentator, he contributed to Matichon News, มติชนทีวี Matichon TV and the website Midnight University.

A recipient of the Fukuoka Prize in 1999, Nithi was researching the Thai variant of Buddhist faith and practice, also reads ancient documents and researches local history in the upper northern region, including books and documents about ancient kingdoms from southern China, including Nanchao, the Salween basin, the Mekong, and Yue. 

Throughout his career, Nithi Auerisvonge made a point to publish firstly in Thai, his major works becoming available in English after 2005. With the historian perspective, he assessed several controversial issues in contemporary Thailand such as ​“psychological gender”, Thai rock and movie scenes, or the social unrest in the Pattani territory, writing after the January-April 2004 riots that ​“modern states – especially developing states – do not look upon millenarian movements in a particularly humane way.” (​‘Understanding the Situation in the South as a ​“Millenarian Revolt”’.)
