Married to US Economic Counselor and State Department official Arthur Zimmerman Gardiner (19011975) — who resigned in protest against the US war in Vietnam in 1967 –, she spent several years in Japan and in Saigon, thus her firsthand knowledge of Angkor. In 1963, she edited and translated into English George Coedes’ Angkor: An Introduction.
