Joseph Perrot

Portrait of Joseph Perrot

Joseph Ferdinand Perrot [signed J. Perrot] (17 June 1873, Saint-Jean-en-Royans, France — 1929, Saigon?) was a French military photographer and the founder of the Service de l’Identité judiciaire du Cambodge in 1908, in particular the anthropometric photography department

After joining the French cavalry in 1894, Perrot first served in the Garde indigène in Congo, then in Gabon, and was assigned to the indigenous guards of Indochina in 1906. For health reasons, he was affected to the French Indochina peninentiary administration, and appointed Director of the Phnom Penh Prison in 1908. A member of the cabinet of Resident-Superieur Paul Luce at the same period than soon-to-be Director of Surete generale Roland Meyer, he was sent in 1911 to the Service de l’Identité judiciaire for training. When World War I, he volunteered again to the military service, serving in a platoon of colonial artillery and was wounded in action in January 1918.

Back to Phnom Penh in 1919, he headed the service of prison wardens of the city, instructing young officers of the forensic and judiciary identity services while taking numerous photographs of the country and its people. Part of his photos were printed and marketed as postcards with the brand name J. Perrot until he left Cambodia in 1928.
