Zenana

A zenana is the part of a house belonging to a Muslim family in the Indian subcontinent which is reserved for the women of the household. The term zenana, a product of Indo-Islamic culture, referred to 'women's quarters' in a royal or princely palace, or in a wealthy family compound.

Western travelers applied the term to the palatial women's quarters in Southeast Asian kingdoms, along with harem. That usage didn't reflect the specific status of women in non-Muslim traditional societies of the region, where polygamy combined with matriarchal legacy.

Niṣkuṭa (sk निष्कुट) referred to either a pleasure-grove near a house or the women's apartments or housing in a royal palace.
