Six Khmer Art Pieces at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Entry #16 in Khmer Art Worldwide Collection

I have managed to find six Khmer artifacts in the collection of the national museum of the Netherlands (Holland), known as the Rijksmuseum. Its located in Amsterdam, having originally been founded in The Hague in 1798, and whilst it has 8,000 pieces on display, its total collection numbers 1 million.

Four of these Khmer artifacts have a very interesting back-story. In 1930, the president of the Royal Asian Art Society, HK Westendorp, travelled to Cambodia where he was warmly welcomed by Henri Marchal and supported by Georges Coedès, two famous names from EFEO, the organization overseeing the Angkor temples at that time.

He was able to select 4 sculptures from the collection at the Angkor Conservation Depot and for the total sum of 2,400 piastres, which was handed to the Ecole des Arts Cambodgiens in Phnom Penh, the exhibits were shipped to Holland in 1932

Three of the artifacts were from inside the city of Angkor Thom: the Lokeshvara head was found near the West Gate, a female deity from Chau Say Tevoda, the head of Brahma from Ta Prohm, and a second female figure from a small temple near Preah Khan of Kompong Svay. These exceptional sculptures now have pride of place in the Rijksmuseum Asian collection, having been on loan from the Royal Asian Art Society since 1972.
